To Live, Not Survive

"To Live, Not Survive" is a visual art project that examines migration, colonialism, gentrification and its effect on sexual and gender based identity and expression. In my own experience, as a multi-racial and multi-cultural person, I was only able to find freedom to express my gender identity and sexuality after migrating to the U.S. My political science background informs my understanding of colonialism, gentrification and white privilege and its impact on cultural norms in my hometown. However, the problem of homophobia and violence towards queer bodies affect so many places and people. “To Live, Not Survive” will use visual narratives to recount the stories of people who have migrated away from their home in order to freely express their gender identity and sexuality. My subjects are from diverse backgrounds and experiences, as I aim to bring everyone's story together for a common element of joy and fulfillment.

The portrait of each subject is in the forefront of the painting, with text and visual references to their migration and transition in gender and sexual identity in the background. Dark and vibrant colors will be used to portray the feelings and emotions of the subject, as the composition highlights their liberation. The paintings range in size, but all aim to capture each person as honestly as possible, as their stories help me to learn more about myself and the world we all navigate. Magazine paper will be used as a mixed media material because of its gloss to be consistent with the shine of acrylic paint. This project will grow my practice by incorporating more details and visual indicators of the subject's story in the background.
